At Tanna Orthodontics, we offer MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) for adults who need to widen the upper jaw but can’t benefit from traditional expanders used in children. MARPE uses small, temporary miniscrews placed in the palate to gently apply pressure directly to the upper jawbone, allowing it to expand even after growth is complete.
This type of expansion can create space for crowded teeth, improve bite alignment, and support better airway function by increasing nasal and oral volume. Many patients also notice improvements in breathing-related concerns, including symptoms associated with sleep apnea.
During treatment, the expander is activated with a small key, gradually widening the palate. A temporary gap may appear between the front teeth, which is completely normal and later closed with braces or Invisalign.
What is the difference between MARPE and a traditional palatal expander?
MARPE works by using small screws to apply pressure directly to the upper jawbone, rather than pushing against the teeth like conventional expanders. This approach allows for more effective jaw expansion with better control, reduced tooth tipping, and improved skeletal results, which is especially important for adult patients.
